Butch is a 9 year old Labrador Retriever who has enjoyed a fun and active life with his owner until recently. Butch's dad noticed some time ago that he was limping on his left rear leg. Concerned, Butch's dad took him to a veterinary office, who diagnosed Butch with an ACL tear. Normally, repairing an ACL can be quite expensive, so Butch's family looked around to find a place that would help them help Butch - they were unable to pay the several thousand dollars they were quoted at the previous hospital. Our doctor examined Butch in preparation for scheduling a surgery to repair his torn cruciate ligament. Strangely, on examination, although Butch was very sore, there was no sign that his cruciate ligament was torn. Concerned, our veterinarian took X-rays of Butch's leg. What the X-rays showed was not a torn cruciate at all - Butch's leg bone was overgrown with growths - it appeared that Butch had the beginings of bone cancer! After talking with Butch's family, it was decided that the best thing for Butch would be to remove the cancerous leg before it spread to the rest of his body. Butch had surgery that week and is doing well. A biopsy of his leg bone was sent out and was positive for cancer. Today, Butch is a happy, healthy dog again, with no pain. He has adapted to life on three legs very well and continues to enjoy the same quality of life he had before surgery.
